Week 14: Spring 2008

Hey...We're The Dartbags:
We Made The Playoffs

By Cuppa Joe Gasparino

I thought this was our first season in A2.

Classic.

To quote my friend Andrew: "You also thought you farted and sh*t your pants once..."

Whether thats true or not...I think you get the point.

We locked down a playoff appearance on monday, beating the Big Triple Hunters, 14-10, at the Jeek.

The celebratory shots of Jamesons were ordered and taken. Thank you, Justin....and thanks to the entire George Keeley crew, for another great regular season.

We toasted to the 'Hunters...handshakes, congrats and good-lucks were exchanged. I then promptly turned to FURIOUS, Vince and Glenn:

CUP: "We should be proud....our first season in A2, and we make the playoffs! Wow. Nice job, guys."

Frank looked at me with a puzzled look on his face, cocking his head slightly to the right. Glenn simply raised his eyebrows, and looked handsome.

VINCE: "What the heck are you talking about, guy?"

Uhhh....what?

Apparently, I missed one small detail.

That we actually played 2 seasons in A2 before....coming in dead-last both times.

I guess some of the guys would say this was a "par-for-the-course" incident for CUPPA. But we still tried to figure out how I could have missed 2 entire seasons, I mean, thats ridiculous.

Not knowing what day of the week it is, thats one thing. But this?

And seasons that I played in. In fact, well enough to win an MVP, only to come up ineligible by a couple of games (nice plug). Are you kidding me?

Finally...we figured it out: this was in the midst of 'Key West', which came at the end of our first season in A2, and spanned over the beginning half of our second season.

Of course I didn't remember that.

But I know...

...it's my own damned fault.

So....after a dead-last finish twice in A2, we were rightfully moved to A3 for 2 seasons, and did well enough to be granted another shot. Now, we're back in again....earned a 4th place finish....and we will invade the bracket once again.

On monday, we will play a tough Sullivan Slingers team, in round 1 of the playoffs.

These guys, and gal, were leading the A3 division most of this season, only to get knocked out in the last week....collateral damage from an insane finish, with Hands Of Doom putting up a nutty 21 spot to take the A3 title.

The top teams in A3, including the 'Slingers, 'Doom, and The Brotherhood, with the Brothers-Healy, are as game as any team in A2, so keep your head up.

Here's the recap of Dartbags VS Big Triple Hunters:

501 - Singles

Glenn Pike (1) *VS* Eric Mattern (2) - credit The Matternhorn with 440 pts. and quick outs. Huge V over the IYH.

Frank Murtha (3) *VS* Scott Sisson (0) - Frank was FURIOUS, and took it out on Scott with 493 pts, in addition to ridicu-clutch outs, that including a 2-dart 94 to end game 3. Tight.

Cuppa Joe Gasparino (1) *VS* Tom Gray (2) - CUPPA stunk, and Tom made him pay for it with decent darts. This round included a pee-break for both guys, who were apparently playing cross-legged in game 2.

Vince The Hornets Nest (2) *VS* Marc Riddick (1) - Riddick land a few over-hand rights, but Vince floated like a butterfly, and stung like a....well....like a Hornet. 340 stingers for the 'Nest.

(7-5 Dartbags)

Cricket

Cuppaglenn (2) *VS* Mattern & Lewis (1) - The Werewolf was howling through this one. CUPPA had a nice ride on his hairy back.

Frankenvince (3) *VS* Gray Sisson (0) - Did I mention Frank was FURIOUS? He was a rabid dog in this round. Irate darts, including 2 x R7's.

(12-6 Dartbags)

501 - Doubles

Frankenpike (1) *VS* Mattern & Lewis (2) - Like Dean & Jerry, Eric & Eddie worked the round like a nightclub. I guess it was a 2-win-minimum...

Cuppa'cenzo (1) *VS* Tom & Marc (2) - Tom's 300, and Riddick's over-hand rights were too much for the typically tough pair, who were probably celebrating a bit too early.

(Final: 14-10 Dartbags)

ASP Results:

FURIOUS 872
Vince 460
CUPPA 195
Pike 193

So, here we are.

Monday night, round 1: Sullivan Slingers, at the Pinch bar in soho.

CUPPA Says (TM): Advice For Monday

(1) every dart counts - one dart could change an entire game. Don't give up on your 3rd dart if you hit a couple of bones. Stay after it.

(2) don't be afraid to step out of the box, and regroup. Shake it off...re-set. Fire away.

(3) Giuseppe Franco has ridiculously thick hair. But its only as thick as its individual strands.

(4) a strong start is huge, but not necessary to win. Play a full-match. Ain't over 'til its over.

(5) don't think....remember what Andrew said. Just throw. Or wear 'Depends'.

(6) I forgot what #6 was supposed to be...

(7) o'clock at the Pinch bar for warm-ups.

Hope to see the whole posse, entourage and hockey team there (Edna).
